After explaining to you what an RSS feed is and how to create an RSS feed for each category I will continue by showing you how to truncate an RSS feed. Truncating an RSS feed means displaying only the first few sentences and a picture in an RSS feed reader. For the visitor to see the rest of the story, he needs to visit your website.
Why would I truncate an RSS feed
There are mainly two reasons why you should consider doing this:
- first: you get more traffic on your page. If the readers check your articles in a feed reader they will not be counted as visitors. They will have to visit your website for this to happen.
- second: you avoid having your content replicated on other websites. Content scrapers scan your RSS feeds and steal their content. They can do this directly from your website, but it is much harder than from an RSS feed.
How to display only a part of your post in an RSS feed
All you have to do to have your RSS feed truncated is to install RSS Image Feed plugin. After installing it, go to its settings in Dashboard -> Plugins -> RSS Image Feed. The below window will open.
Here you can customize your RSS feed as you please – specify image size, image number, the size of the article summary and so on. Once this is done go to Dashboard -> Settings -> Reading and chose the Summary option for “For each article in a feed, show“.
That is it. Nothing else to be done. Now your posts should be truncated. This method is tested with BlogLovin, Feedburner, and Mailchimp. Let me know if you try it with other RSS feed readers and if it works or not. Thanks!
