Either you are a first-time entrepreneur or you already have some experience in the business world, you know that one of the first things you need to think about when starting a business is the company name. The business name is one of the most important branding factors so you need to be very careful when choosing it. And because you probably don’t afford to hire a professional to do this for you, check below some hints about how to create the best company name for your business.
1. Pick a short name
A short name (10 letters at most) will be remembered very fast. It should not have more than 2 words and it should be easy to pronounce and spell. Make sure you like the sound of it as you will tell it a lot – on the phone, to any customer, to your family, to your suppliers etc. This can prove to be a difficult task as today most descriptive short words are already used by other businesses, but still not impossible.
2. Make sure is unique
The company name should be as unique as possible. You don’t want to have a similar name with your competition. Customers may get confused and pick them instead of you. And all of this just because they didn’t understand your name correctly. Make sure is memorable, like no other out there!
3. Think in perspective
Most success stories started from something small. In time they developed and grew to be what they are today. This could be your story to, so think that in time your range of products and services might extend. Pick a name for your startup that can cover more than one activity, service or product. For example, if you sell muffins don’t choose as business name something like “Muffin Master”. Why? Because in the near future you might want to sell also pancakes and macarons. That name would suggest that you are a master when it comes to muffins, but your macarons and pancakes are not the best.
4. Do a brainstorming session
As your business name is for others to know you by, you should ask your friends and family to make a list of names they would like. Gather all the ideas and make a selection. Pick 7 or 8 names you really like and ask their opinion. The one getting most votes should be the one you need. A very good idea is to do this also with kids. They have a very good imagination and the outcome will surprise you.
5. Make sure your company name tells a story
Before you even think of starting a new business you should know what that business brings to the market. What is the added value, what is the story that makes it stand among all others, how is it better than the competition and why someone should spend money on it. All this must be reflected in the company name. You might say that is no easy task to sum up all these in 2 words but if you do it, you’re up to a great brand.
