Communication is key in so many aspects of our lives that it cannot be neglected anymore. If you want to be listened and not just heard you need to make sure you know how to pass on the information. In the following lines, I will reveal 10 strategies to improve your communication skills. Let’s get started.
1. Start your speech with a WOW fact
Find that hook that will trap your audience’s attention right from the beginning. How to start with a WOW fact? There are 3 ways:
- Open your speech with a meaningful question. One that will make the people think about.
- Tell a captivating short story.
- Connect your lecture with something your predecessor speaker said. Preferably something funny or emotional.
2. End your speech with a WOW fact
Before closing your statement you need to prepare two, three phrases that the audience will leave with. They have to be powerful, deep and make them take action.
3. Use the contrast in your favor
Compare two elements to emphasize one of them. For a better understanding look at the below picture.
Quick question: which orange circle is bigger, the one on the left or the one on the right? The correct answer would be none. Both of them have the same size. Measure them if you are not convinced. This is how powerful contrast can be.
4. Create a golden phrase
Summarize an important idea in ten or fewer words. Think of it as it would be a pickup line. Rather than giving a speech of how important commitment is you could say something like: “Give 100% in everything that you do, no matter what you do“.
5. Make numbers more understandable
If you have to present numbers and statistics make sure you don’t bore everyone in the audience. Not all of us are mathematicians. Great speakers place their numbers in an understandable context.
“IPad Mini is 7.2 mm thick, it’s as thin as a pencil” – Phil Schiller (2012, iPad Mini release).
6. Tell stories – always
To make your speech more easy to follow insert short personal stories that fit the subject. If you can’t find that kind of stories tell one that you heard from someone else. It doesn’t really matter. In the end, the important thing is to make your public feel like they are told a story not held a lecture.
7. Use analogies
Analogies are like an anchor. They help you remember things easier by referring to something you are already familiar with. Present your content in such a manner that can be understood by anyone. It can go like this:
A personal business coach is not like a medic, to treat your disease. A business coach is like a trainer: it tells what the problem is and gives you the tools to solve it, but you will have to do it yourself.
8. Use strong words
To underline the importance of what you say, use words that give power to your speech. Such words are the most, the biggest, amazing, unbelievable, great, splendid, magnificent, exceptional, genius, superb and so on.
9. Make them crave for what you are about to say
Anticipate what you are about to say next and make the audience crave for it. Most common ways to do that is to present some benefits or advantages of what they will get if they do and act how you say. Another one is to let them know what they will lose if they don’t.
10. Create a BANG moment
During your speech make sure to introduce a moment that will blow everyone’s mind. Something they will remember years from now. Maybe not the best, but still a BANG moment, was during Bill Gate’s Windows 98 live demo. Watch the scene below. Create something similar, but with a positive connotation for you.
