Back in the days, it seemed rather easy for a man to pass as a gentleman. An ironed shirt, a shaved beard, and a well-behaved attitude were all you needed. What about today? Well, today, in a day you can easily meet people from 3 different continents, all of them having different cultures and notions about what it means to be a gentleman. And yes, things got more complicated. To help you sail through this puzzle of social etiquette we made a list of 10 bits of advice for true gentlemen.
1. Nothing looks more badass than a well-tailored suit
Couldn’t agree more! A clean, well-tailored suit with shiny shoes is the best outfit for a gentleman. It doesn’t matter that you have a beard, tattoos or ear piercing. You can be fat or skinny, in a suit that fits you, you will look better than in any other outfit. Well tailored suits are to women what lingerie is to men!
2. No matter their job or status in life, everyone deserves your respect
It doesn’t matter if he is a salesman, a bus driver or a politician. All of us play our part in the world and without each other things wouldn’t work. True gentlemen are polite, show respect and gratitude to everyone, no matter what they do or how important they might think they are. Most of the people will surprise you.
3. Never take her to the movies on the first date
Even if she’s the one who makes this proposal, gently deny it. Why? Because on the first date you need to get to know each other. Sitting in a dark room without speaking or seeing each other won’t make that happen. You’ll have plenty of time afterward to see all the movies in the world if it turns out that is something you both like. Take her to dinner, a walk in the park or in a quiet cozy place. Let her talk about herself, let her know that you show interest in her personality and things that she does.
4. Always stand to shake someone’s hand
It usually happens to be sited at a table when someone new joins a discussion. Make sure you always stand when you shake their hands. It is a basic sign of politeness and if you don’t have it, the rest is useless.
5. Keep a change of clothes at the office
Accidents happen. You spill your coffee, someone bumps into you with their full of ketchup hot dog or a fast car splashes mud and water all over you. Or maybe is just a hot day and you are all sweat. Having a spare set of clothes in the office can save the day for you.
6. Ask more than you answer
Everyone avoids people that only talk about themselves. Listen more, be polite, never interrupt, and speak only when you truly have something to say. It is a good way to find out more information and be perceived as a good listener.
7. If you are the smartest person in the room, you are in the wrong room
A true gentleman always tries to become a better prson, to improve himself. Spending time with the wrong people can drag you down. Make sure you enjoy the company of smart, well-educated people, who can help you become more than you are.
8. Be conscious about your body language
Whenever you sit, stand or walk, make sure you have a straight position. Look forward not at the tip of your feet, firmly shake hand and look the other people in their eyes when talking to them.
9. Go for women you perceive to be “out of your league”
You will surprise yourself. If you respect all the above advice you can bet your image will improve in front of women. Be confident, women find that sexy as hell. Compliment her shoes and you are half way there.
10. No one is on their deathbed wishing they spent more time at work
Enjoy your life. Be genuine in what you do, spend time with family and friends, and taste everything this life has to offer.
