In nowadays there are a lot of methods and solutions for data transfer. Some are secure, other not so much. Cloud hosting is definitely an option, but what happens if you want to keep your data on an external hard disk or UBS stick? How can you protect your files in case you lose the USB drive or someone steals it? Very simple. In just a few steps you can set a password for your USB stick. Continue reading to see how to do it.
Which is the best solution for an USB drive security?
As expected with such a common subject, there are many solutions that can protect your USB stick data. BitLocker, included in recent versions of Windows, can be used successfully in a wide variety of situations, although you might have difficulties using that stick on some PCs and Windows versions.
To be sure your data will be available in all situations, in this tutorial I am going to teach you how to use Rohos Mini Drive to set a password for your USB drive.
How to use Rohos Mini Drive to secure your USB drive
Rohos Mini Drive has two versions: free and paid. The only difference between these two is that in the free version you are limited to 8Gb of data. If you want to secure a bigger partition you’ll have to turn to the paid version. Another solution is to split your data into multiple 8Gb partitions. The software is available for download here.
How Rohos Mini Drive works
Instead of encrypting your entire USB drive, this program creates a file on the stick with a size of your choosing. That file is actually a virtual partition whose data you cannot access unless you know the password.
Advantage: on a larger USB drive you can protect only part of the data. Starting on this premises you can still share your USB drive with others while still keeping your confident information secured.
Disadvantage: the downside is that if someone decides to format your stick, deleting all the data on it, it has this option.
How to use Rohos Mini Drive to encrypt your USB drive
First, download and install the program. It shouldn’t take more than a couple of seconds. Once installed start the application and on the upper left side select Encrypt USB drive option. Your USB stick will be scanned and a new window will pop up. Here you can set the password to be used and the following (from the Change option):
- partition size
- disk letter
- file system type
- name of the partition
After you set all of the above just click on Create disk button. Depending on the chosen size and stick speed this process can last from a few seconds to several minutes. After the partition is created and encrypted you might be asked to format it. Don’t worry, this is normal.
How to access the files on the new USB drive
After the partition has been created you will notice that 2 files will appear on your USB stick – Rohos Mini and Rohos Mini Drive Portable. Double click on Rohos Mini and fill in the password you just set. As an option, you can choose to make the drive read-only to avoid others to modify the files on the new partition. Once you confirm with the OK button, in Windows Explorer a new USB drive will be displayed. It is the new partition, usable as any other external hard disk or USB stick.
