If you thought the “Night at the Museum” was just an amusing movie starring Ben Stiller, think again. Now in its 40th year, the Night of Museums is an annual event that takes place throughout the world. Many cultural institutions open their doors to visitors after dark for a series of special events, all in honor of International Museum Day.
Uniting the museum community
International Museum Day is meant to raise awareness regarding the role of the museums in our society. Their educational, cultural, and economical purposes are of great importance for any community and its members. Since 1977, on 18th of May, institutions all over the world celebrate this event each year. Now, after 4 decades, more than 35,000 museums, from over 145 countries, take part in the celebrations dedicated to this occasion.
International Museum Day 2017
Each year a theme relevant for the museum community all over the world is proposed to represent the event. In 2017, the chosen theme is “Museums and contested histories: Saying the unspeakable in museums“. In just a few words this year’s motif wants to bring reconciliation among people through a better understanding and acceptance of a contested history.
You can see this year’s special designed banner below. You can find the poster in different sizes, formats, and languages here.
