We all saw or at least heard about the Fast and Furious franchise. Fast cars, beautiful girls, hundreds of horse power. All illegal. Well, it the end, that was the sparkle that fueled the entire story. Outside the movie set things are a little bit different. Illegal street racing is a thing, no doubt, but at a lower level than presented on the big screen. As the technology evolved, a new kind of street racing made its way to the surface. And it is legal, exciting and requires very good driving skills.
Illegal street racing made legal
You’re probably never heard of DCL and have no clue what it means. Well, DCL means Drone Champions League and probably represents the future of racing of any kind. It’s a totally new sport, whose rules are changed every year. Registration conditions are minimal: you need a drone and the skills to handle it. No age limit is applied.
What is drone racing?
In a time when robots, artificial intelligence, and virtual reality are more and more popular, drone racing seems the natural step forward in the entertaining industry. Similar to illegal street racing it usually takes place right downtown. The track consists of obstacles, gates, and checkpoints. There are three types of drone races:
- Time-trial: similar to WRC (World Rally Championship) the “driver” who completes the course in the shortest time wins. Only one drone at a time is allowed on the track.
- Drag race: two or more drones race in the same time on a 100m track. The first to cross the finish line wins.
- Rotorcross: this is a time-trial category carried out with more drones on the same time on the track.
Where and when are DCL events taking place
There are several official races scheduled this year. To be more precise 5 in Europe and 1 in Asia. In time, as the community grows and the game gets more popular, for sure, more races will be added to the calendar. In 2016 only 3 races took place, yet this year the number has doubled.
The tracks can be organized in different locations like a city downtown or even a salt mine. Yes, a salt mine, Salina Turda – Romania, to be more precise. Have a look at the below photo gallery to see how amazing this sport really is.
How to join a DCL race
As mentioned before, the requirements to join a race are minimal. Make sure you have a fast drone, the skills to drive it and register on the DCL official website. If you are lucky enough and prove to be worthy, a team will select you to be their driver. Starting 2018 drivers will be able to qualify in DCL events through a computer game.
